The MLK Cultural Horizons Club is designed to identify and develop student leaders , while providing service to the school and global  community at large.

Dr. King prayed , worked for, and envisioned the time when all should be judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin. Here at SOMS our club has a tradition of service, education, giving back and recognizing those who have come before us.

Cosby Jr.., Educator, Entertainer, Philanthropist who says "Danson is more then a prophet - he is what the world needs this is the voice that is going to change the lives of all children in need. And Susan L. Taylor Co-Founder National Cares Mentoring Movement and Editor in Chief Emeritus ESSENCE who says " Danson is a modern day Rumi. his writing is stunning and beautiful like his person.

Those who can...Teach
Those who care...Teach
To teach is to impart knowledge or skill; to cause to learn by example or experience.
 
It has been said that "Many are called, but few are chosen."  This adage applies most definitely to educators as a whole, but could have been coined specifically for all of you who participated in Saturday's Woman's Conference.
 
I cannot begin to tell you all how much I appreciate your participation and expertise.  There will be a comments section on our website www.mlkculturalclub.org
from our girls who attended the conference next week.  I think you will be amazed at what our young ladies had to say. 
Knowledge is "POWER."  Thanks for sharing yours!

We support school based organizations/clubs through donations and work.

We donated $1,000.00 to the School Play to help with equipment and revitalization of Sterling Hall.  We have held Dances, Talent Shows, Fashion Shows, hosted the Oranges/Maplewood NAACP ACT-SO TEAM.

MLK has a sister school -

The Chilulu School in Malawi, East Africa. We send school supplies, clothing, and medication for children with HIV/AIDS who were left orphaned. W have been working with Chilulu since 1993.

The trees planted around the school were done by the club in honor of Arbor Day.

We have also worked with organizations in town as host/hostesses for programs.  i.e. South Orange Civic Association, South Orange Historical and Preservation Society .

Our club has had numerous guest speakers of varied backgrounds from around the world! All focusing on our strong and proud history, as well as our sense of purpose. Among them were

 

·   Chakufwa Chihana, Yusuf McDadlly Juwayeyi, renowned Anthropologist whose lecture focused on prehistoric technology and economy and how, when, and why they change through time. He also discovered a hominid that pre-dated LUCY on a dig sponsored by the Leaky Foundation.

 

·   Wyclef Jean who spoke w/ the students about working hard and setting goals. During this exchange Wyclef sat in on a jam session with MLK Club member Eric Hudson. Eric performed with Wyclef at Carnegie Hall.

 

·   Carla Peterman, Rhodes Scholar and a former SOMS student.

 

·   Lauryn Hill Entertainer/Humanitarian and former MLK Club member.

 

 

Coming in February 2008 will be a multi-talented famed Broadway entertainer,  musician, producer, singer and song writer.  Stay tuned for more to come.
